Hyper Window, 2022-
Series [Hyper window] has limited actual and physical experience and access and is curious about objects that can only be understood through digital information. We explore online images that are reproduced through countless uploads and downloads, transfers and storage, directing and re-editing, and travel, spy, and voyeur through the digital screens of modern society where those images are mass-produced. Can the countless digital experiences be considered our experiences? How much or deeply do I know? What does it mean to know? Through my work, digital images collected under one theme are converted from immaterial materials to materials. It is a metaphor for the endless information and images in the ‘new tab’ and ‘new window’, which are the containers of the screen, and the fragile but destructive digital images are constantly mixed and collide within the spatialized screen. Through the work, algorithms that are solidly designed for the digital society, information that moves quickly from issue to issue within it, people who replace their existence with information, and a society of information exchange without obsession with updates and empathy, etc. are constantly repeating reproduction and spread. The works observe the digital images and the screens in modern society.

시리즈[Hyper window]는 "HYPER"라는 어원 속 초과, 과잉, 과도한이라는 어원과 Hyper-link, Hyper-media, Hyper-automation등의 형식이 연결되어 네트워크 상에서 빠르게 이동, 확장이라는 의미를 인용한다. 한 개인의 일생동안 어쩌면 끝내 ‘디지털 경험’으로만 완결되어 버릴 수 있는 많은 사건과 문화들을 탐구하며 ‘디지털 조각’들이 한 개인과 사회에 전달할 수 있는 의미와 영향력들을 헤아려 본다. 주요 작업의 소재는 실제적, 물리적 경험과 접근이 제한되어 있으며, 오직 디지털 정보로만 이해할 수 있는 대상 ‘북한’을 탐색한다. 특히 대한민국 사람으로써 ‘가장 가깝고도 먼 금기된 이웃’ 북한을 디지털 세계에서야 비로소 자유로이 여행하는 작업 과정 안에서 하나의 대상의 수 없는 정보가 파편화, 충돌, 응결되기를 반복하는 것을 포착한다. 또한 나 자신이 살아온 내셔널리티 속 정치적, 문화적 환경을 작업의 개념으로 적극적으로 활용하며, 실제와 미디어 세계의 간극과 상상력을 극대화하기를 시도한다. 우리는 실제 세계와는 어떤 다른 방식으로 디지털 세계의 정보를 받아들이고 있으며, 어느 사건의 진실은 개개인에게 하나의 정보로 도달하기까지 (원본에서 파편이 되기까지) 어떤 과정을 지나쳐올까? 작업을 통해 디지털 사회에 견고히 설계된 알고리즘 속에서 이슈의 이슈로 빠르게 이동하는 사람들, 자신의 존재를 정보로 치환하고, 업데이트의 강박과 공감 없는 정보교환 등 끊임없이 재생산과 확산을 반복하는 현대 사회의 디지털 이미지와 화면을 관찰한다. 데이터 단위로 구성된 디지털 이미지들을 비물질적 재료에서 물질로 전환되고, 알고리즘, 하이퍼커넥트, 팝업 등의 디지털 화면의 언어를 통해 실제 물리적 공간에 옮겨 새로운 시각을 환기시킨다.
