Non-standard Immortal Contract, 2023-Interdisciplinary collaboration, technology and art

Yena Kim raises ethical questions about "digital immortality" which has emerged rapidly within the digital industry. Through her creative process, she identifies the social, institutional, and ethical gaps surrounding the "posthumous digital data" of individuals. In response, Yena Kim plans a project titled "Non-Standard Immortality Contract" in collaboration with terminally ill YouTuber Ga-Young Hong, to explore the issues related to "posthumous digital data."
Yena Kim, as a creator who is personally detached from the "data" owner Gayeong Hong, works alongside content industry technicians and artists to document in detail the concerns and ethical dilemmas that arise during the creative process. On the other hand, Gayeung Hong, as the data provider and YouTuber, experiences the possibility that her digital presence can be manipulated and recreated without her consent or free will through her channel and streaming. Through public discourse from the contrasting perspectives of these two creators from different fields, the project aims to address new questions of our time.

김예나는 빠른 속도로 넘쳐나는 디지털 산업에 등장한 '디지털 영생'에 대해 윤리적 의문을 가진다. 그 이후 창작과정 속에서 끊임없이 발생하는 개개인의 '사후 디지털 데이터'에 대한 사회적, 제도적, 윤리적 공백을 확인한다. 김예나는 이를 역으로 질문하기 위해 시한부 유튜버 홍가영과 함께 '사후 디지털 데이터'에 대한 문제를 탐구하는 프로젝트 '비표준 불별 계약'을 기획한다.
김예나는 '데이터'의 주인인 홍가영과 사적으로는 분리된 창작자와 컨텐츠 산업 기술자, 예술가들과 함께 프로젝트를 진행하며 창작활동 중 발생하는 고민과 윤리적 문제를 다양한 방식으로 낱낱이 기록한다. 반면, 데이터 제공자이자 유튜버인 주인공 홍가영은 채널과 스트리밍을 통해 더 이상 자신의 결정과 자유 의지 없이 조작, 재창조될 수 있다는 가능성을 경험한다. 다른 영역의 두 창작자의 상반된 관점을 통한 공론화를 시도함을 통해 현시대의 새로운 질문들을 담는다.
As society becomes increasingly digitalized, the tangible and analog forms of life are being transformed into intangible "data (information)." Amidst the flood of data being continuously generated, modern individuals are losing their senses, thoroughly unprotected. Not only are we unable to cope with the vast amounts of data, but we also continually convert our real lives into data, allowing ourselves to become part of this overwhelming flow. Whether we can restore the agency of individual data fragments that flow beneath this surface remains uncertain. The growing ambiguity surrounding personal agency and privacy in relation to data leads to questions such as, "Is big data (technology) truly for humans?" and "Are we humans for the big data society and the 2. Research future society of artificial intelligence (technology)?" Recently, this insensitivity to data is even disrupting the concept of human death. Despite the strange connotations of terms like "posthumous (meta-human) labor contracts" and "digital resurrection," the reality we have already encountered is becoming quite familiar. We are not only resurrecting deceased individuals through digital technology but also engaging with their posthumous activities based on their previous work. Perhaps we are passively witnessing an era where political and cultural voices are shaped by the intervention of others and new technologies such as artificial intelligence, irrespective of the deceased's wishes. The project aims to borrow the real-time and perspective of terminal illness. It closely examines the relationship between "death" and "data" to explore the dynamics of . The lead, Ga-Young Hong, and creator, Yena Kim, establish a relationship between employee and employer, approaching the concept of contracting "digital immortality" and "digital labor (post-physical death)" through digital technology. This exploration dramatically highlights the blurred boundaries between life and death and the fear of an uncontrollable future. By investigating the loss of "death" in humanity, the project aims to revive the meaning of life as a dual aspect of death, addressing the ethical fractures of contemporary technology and posing the "questions that society should have asked" about the future.
사회가 디지털화됨에 따라, 물질적이고 아날로그적인 삶의 형태가 비물질적인 ‘데이터(정보)’의 형태로 전환되고, 구축되어가는 데이터(정보)의 홍수 속에 현대인들은 철저히 무방비 상태로 감각을 잃어가고 있다. 방대한 양의 데이터에 맞서지 못할 뿐만 아니라, 우리는 우리의 실제의 삶을 데이터로 전환해 끊임없이 데이터의 홍수 속으로 흘려보내며, 그 흐름의 일부가 되기어가기를 자초하고 있는지도 모른다. 그 수면 아래로 흘러 침체된 개개인의 데이터 조각들의 주체성을 회복시킬 수 있는지는 미지수에 놓인다. 이처럼 점차 더욱 불분명해지는 데이터에 대한 개인의 주체성이나 프라이버시 문제는, ‘과연 인간을 위한 빅데이터(기술)인지’, ‘빅데이터 사회와 인공지능 미래사회(기술)를 위한 인간인지’하는 질문으로 이어진다. 최근 이러한 데이터에 관한 현대인의 무감각은 인간의 죽음까지 뒤흔들고 있다. ‘사후 (메타휴먼) 노동 계약’, ‘ 디지털 부활’ 등의 생경한 어감들이 주는 낯섦에 비해, 이미 도달한 현실의 풍경은 꽤나 익숙해져 간다. 우린 이미 죽어서 고인이 된 사람들을 디지털 기술로 부활시킬 뿐 아니라 생전의 활동을 기반으로 그들의 고용 활동을 마주하고 있다. 어쩌면 고인들의 의사와는 전혀 관련없는 타인과 인공지능 등의 신기술의 개입을 통해 정치적, 문화적 목소리를 내는 시대를 무감각하게 목도하고 있다.프로젝트를 통해 실제 시한부의 시간과 시야를 빌린다. 그리고 ‘죽음’과 ‘데이터’라는 두 소재를 중첩시켜 <기술과 윤리>의 관계를 면밀히 관찰한다. 주연 홍가영과 창작자 김예나는 피고용인과 고용인이라는 관계를 설정하고, 디지털 기술을 통해 ‘(디지털) 불멸’, ‘(신체적 죽음 이후)디지털 노동’을 계약한다는 개념으로 접근한다. 이를 통해 모호해진 삶과 죽음의 경계선과 통제 불가능한 미래에 대한 두려움을 극적으로 이입시킨다. ‘죽음’을 상실하는 인간을 탐구함으로써, 죽음의 양면인 삶의 의미를 환기시키고, 기술을 통해 벌어지고 있는 동시대의 윤리적 균열과 다가온 미래를 향해 사회가 놓친 ‘물어야 했을 질문’을 다시금 건넨다.
